AZOS ViV
Anapa Zonal Experimental Station of Viticulture and Winemaking
General Information and Research Areas
Anapa Zonal Experimental Station of Viticulture and Winemaking (AZESV&W) operates as a branch of the Federal State Budget Scientific Institution "North-Caucasian Federal Scientific Center of Horticulture, Viticulture, Wine-making" (FSBSI NCFSCHVW). This scientific research institution is located in the city of Anapa.
The experimental station was established in 1922. The contemporary research activities of AZESV&W are carried out within the framework of the State Task of the Ministry of Science and Higher Education of the Russian Federation, focusing on the following core scientific areas:
- Search, mobilization, conservation, and study of grape genetic resources for subsequent selection for commercial production and utilization in breeding programs;
- Creation of new-generation grape varieties with a high potential for adaptability, productivity, and manufacturability;
- Development of methods for the assessment and analysis of morphometric parameters of terroirs based on agrophysical and agrochemical soil indices;
- Investigation of the mechanisms through which various biogenic and anthropogenic factors of grape cultivation and wine production influence the quality and safety of winemaking products.
Scientific research aimed at the conservation of the gene pool is conducted on the basis of the Center of Collective Use — Anapa Ampelographic Collection, which comprised 4,974 genotypes at the end of 2024.
Key Breeding Achievements
Within the scope of long-term scientific research in the field of plant breeding, the station's scientists have achieved the following results:
- Grape Variety Breeding: specialists at AZESV&W have developed wine grape varieties used for the production of high-quality wines, such as Krasnostop AZOS, Rubin AZOS, and Cabernet AZOS, as well as large-fruited table grape varieties that have achieved widespread recognition, including Nadezhda AZOS.
- Hybrid Fund Development: the station's researchers developed the "Method for Accelerated Selection of Grape Varieties." This agrotechnology enables the cultivation of hybrid seedlings characterized by a more developed trunk, superior cane maturation, robust foliage mass, and maximum annual growth increment. This approach significantly shortens the breeding process by allowing the seedlings to be transplanted onto a permanent location within the hybrid plot during the subsequent winter-spring period. Based on the results of the breeding work, new promising hybrid grape forms that surpass standard varieties in a complex of economically valuable and adaptively significant traits have been selected as elite, including forms III-62-43 and I-K-1-24.
