Dimitar Babrikov

Professor Dimitar Babrikov, PhD, ScD, entered the history of global ampelography as one of the prominent leaders of the Faculty of Viticulture and Horticulture at the Agricultural University of Plovdiv. As a brilliant theorist and practitioner, he laid the foundations for modern Bulgarian seedless table viticulture and developed yield management methods that received international recognition.

Academic and Pedagogical Activity and Recognition

Dimitar Babrikov was born in 1934 in the village of Mandritsa, Haskovo Province. In 1957, he graduated with honors from the Higher Agricultural Institute in Plovdiv (now the Agricultural University), and in 1959, he was elected as an assistant professor in the Department of Viticulture. He subsequently defended his candidate (1968) and doctoral (1977) dissertations, achieving the rank of professor in 1980. For his outstanding contributions to agricultural science and education, Professor Babrikov was awarded the highest academic title of Doctor Honoris Causa on December 17, 2009.

The main scientific milestones of Professor Babrikov include:

  • Mathematical Yield Forecasting: Professor Babrikov, together with a team of scientists, developed a unique method for short-term and long-term yield forecasting of vineyard plantations. The method was successfully implemented into wide agricultural practice in Bulgaria in 1974. This achievement is officially recognized as the second most significant fundamental and applied scientific breakthrough in Bulgarian 20th-century viticulture, following the introduction of high-stem training systems.
  • Academic Publications: Babrikov is a co-author of foundational national textbooks titled "Lozarstvo" (Viticulture) and practical handbooks on ampelography written in collaboration with H. Todorov, L. Radulov, and D. Braykov.

Breeding Achievements and Signature Varieties

The breeding work of Dimitar Babrikov was aimed at a radical modernization of the regional assortment. He sought to develop table varieties capable of competing on the global market due to outstanding market attributes, firm crisp flesh, and a complete absence of seeds.

Key varieties created by the professor include:

  • Evmolpia (Thracian Mavrud): A renowned wine grape variety developed in collaboration with S. Kukunov using the intraspecific hybridization method by crossing Mavrud × Merlot (registered in 1991). The variety achieved early ripening and soft tannins while retaining the deep color intensity of the autochthonous Mavrud parent.
  • Afrodita: An outstanding ultra-early white seedless table variety. Today, the Afrodita variety ranks among the most demanded table grapes on a global scale, ensuring high export potential for farmers due to its ideal sugar balance and firm texture.
  • Trakia: An early-season, large-fruited table variety developed to intensively supply resort and tourist destinations with fresh, high-quality produce.

Scientific Legacy

Professor Babrikov demonstrated that modern ampelography must be precise and commercially successful. His methodology for vineyard yield forecasting protected viticultural enterprises from environmental and management risks, while the seedless table grapes he bred positioned Bulgaria among the leaders in table grape exports. Varieties from his selection are actively established in new industrial vineyards both in Bulgaria and across Southern European countries.
