Tairov Institute
The Tairov National Scientific Center "Institute of Viticulture and Winemaking" is the oldest research institution in the field of viticulture and winemaking in the post-Soviet space. Located in the Odessa Oblast (Tairove), the institute has served for over a century as a recognized international hub for academic science, establishing the foundations of scientific viticulture, phylloxera-resistant nursery management, and commercial winemaking in the North-Western Black Sea region.
History of Establishment and Stages of Development
The foundation of the institute is deeply intertwined with the name of the outstanding scientist and ampelographer, Professor Vasily Egorovich Tairov. In 1905, through private donations and with the support of the Department of Agriculture, he organized the Winemaking Station of Russian Viticulturists and Winemakers in Odessa. This was the very first research and experimental institution of its kind in the Russian Empire.
In 1914, the station relocated to the left bank of the Sukhyi Estuary, where the construction of laboratory facilities and experimental vineyards began. In 1931, the institution was reorganized into the Ukrainian Research Institute of Viticulture and Winemaking, and in 1936, in commemoration of the station's 30th anniversary, it was named after its founder, V.E. Tairov. In 2003, by presidential decree, the institute was granted the status of a National Scientific Center.
Core Areas of Scientific Activity
Scientists at the institute have formulated fundamental approaches to viticulture in zones of risky and winter-protected vine cultivation. The current research structure encompasses:
- Genetics, Breeding, and Ampelography: Developing next-generation table and wine grape varieties with complex resistance to frost, drought, fungal diseases, and pests; preserving and studying the unique gene pool within the ampelographic collection.
- Biotechnology and Nursery Management: Developing technologies for clonal selection, eliminating viral and bacterial diseases from planting material using in vitro culture methods, and improving the cultivation processes of grafted vines.
- Ecology and Zonal Viticulture: Ampeloclomatic zoning and assessing land suitability for commercial vineyard development using GIS technologies.
- Winemaking: Designing original technologies for still, fortified, and dessert wines, establishing regulatory documentation, and conducting micro-winemaking for the enological evaluation of new candidate varieties.
Contribution to Breeding and Key Achievements
The breeding school of the Tairov National Research Center for Viticulture and Winemaking has made a monumental contribution to the development of the modern commercial and private grape variety assortment. Utilizing interspecific hybridization and complex recurrent selections, the institute's scientists developed outstanding varieties that combine high-quality yields with enhanced genetic adaptability to environmental stress factors, winter freezes, and phylloxera.
Among the most renowned grape varieties developed by the Tairov Institute are:
- Table Varieties: Arkadiya (one of the most popular, highly productive, and commercially successful large-fruited varieties worldwide), Flora (widely known as Lora), Original, Tair.
- Wine Varieties (Technical): Odesskiy Chernyy (a famous variety yielding intensely colored, full-bodied red wines with a rich flavor profile), Sukholimanskiy Belyy, Muskat Odesskiy, Rubin Tairovskiy, Zagrey, and Ovidiopolskiy.
The institute maintains active scientific and methodical cooperation with leading international viticultural research centers, holds exclusive rights to dozens of breeding achievement patents, and its foundational guidelines on nursery and rootstock management remain baseline standards for southern viticultural regions.
