Origin and economic importance
The rootstock variety Paulsen 1447 was obtained by breeder Federico Paulsen in 1896. This variety results from the crossbreeding of Vitis berlandieri and Vitis rupestris cv. Martin. It is characterized by moderate to high adaptation to limestone soils, withstanding up to 17% of "active" limestone. An important biological property of the rootstock is its high resistance to drought during the vegetative period.
The variety Paulsen 1447 exhibits a very high tolerance to the root form of phylloxera and possesses excellent resistance attributes against Meloidogyne incognita and Meloidogyne arenaria nematodes. When grafted, this rootstock confers a strong vigor to the scion and induces high yields. However, the initial development of the plants is rather slow. The only officially certified clone in France carries the number 1307.
Ampelographic description of the rootstock variety Paulsen 1447
The identification of Paulsen 1447 is based on the following morphological characteristics:
- Young shoot (tip): The tip of the young shoot features a high density of prostrate hairs.
- Young leaves: They are slightly bronze on the surface.
- Shoots: The vines feature a bushy and erect growth habit. The shoot surface is ribbed, with a high density of erect hairs on both nodes and internodes. The coloration of the internodes is red or pinkish on the dorsal side and green on the ventral side. In winter, the lignified shoots retain a medium density of erect hairs.
- Adult leaf: Adult leaves are small, entire, kidney-shaped, and light green in color. The leaf blade is folded towards the upper side. The petiole sinus is open, V- or brace-shaped. On the lower side of the leaves, a medium density of erect hairs is noted.
- Flower: Female type.
- Berry: Very small in size, round-shaped, with a blue-black skin coloration.
Nursery management attributes
The variety Paulsen 1447 demonstrates high technical aptitude in nursery management operations. Collected cuttings possess a good capacity for rooting (without the use of growth regulators) and ensure high outputs in bench and field grafting.
