Main Characteristics of the Variety
KAYLASHKI RUBIN is a technical red grapevine variety featuring a medium-to-late or late ripening period. Full technological maturity of the crop under Pleven conditions is achieved from late September to early October, with the total duration of the vegetative period from budburst lasting approximately 170–180 days. The vines demonstrate vigorous growth with high maturity rates of annual shoots by the end of the season. The average cluster weight is 203.6 grams. The productivity is high, with the average yield per vine reaching 5.46 kg. The variety is capable of accumulating between 21% and 23% of sugars with a titratable juice acidity level of 7–9 g/l. Its utilization is primarily intended for winemaking.
Morphological Description of the Variety Features
Based on the results of the ampelographic analysis, the following morphological characteristics have been identified:
- Young shoot (tip): The tip of the shoot is heavily pubescent, felted. Young leaves are green with a specific copper tint and possess pubescence. The shoot itself is slightly pubescent, with distinct wine-red longitudinal stripes.
- Mature leaf: The leaf blade is large (18.8 x 16.8 cm), thick, and elongated. The indentation is medium, with five distinct lobes. The upper surface is net-wrinkled and finely blistered. The lower surface features weak webbed-bristly pubescence. Main and petiolar veins are glabrous with rare bristles, colored violet. The petiole is of medium length, with violet coloration. Autumn leaf coloration is red.
- Mature canes: Internodes are of medium length (about 5.5 cm) and chestnut color. The shoot is slightly flattened, smooth, with a small pith. Tendrils are long or medium, with weak branching, rapidly lignifying.
- Cluster: Of medium size (14.6 x 9.2 cm), featuring a cylindrical shape. The structure of the cluster is dense, sometimes forming a single wing. The cluster stem is of medium length (4.8 cm), green, and fragile.
- Berry: Rounded, medium in size (13.88 x 13.63 mm). The skin is violet-red, thin, yet tough and elastic. The pulp has a juicy consistency; the taste is simple and harmonious. Within the structural composition of the berry, the pulp accounts for 85.68%, the skin for 10.15%, and the seeds for 4.37%.
Agrotechnical Features of the KAYLASHKI RUBIN Grapevine Variety
The KAYLASHKI RUBIN grapevine variety is distinguished by very high fertility rates. In commercial vineyard layouts with a modified Moser training system, the developed buds constitute 86.80%, of which 70.80% represent fruitful shoots. The fertility coefficient is equal to 1.46. High fertility is also characteristic of replacement and dormant buds. To prevent overloading of the vines and a decrease in must quality, short pruning of the canes is strictly recommended. The plants possess increased complex resistance to downy mildew (1–2 points), root phylloxera (2–3 points), powdery mildew, and botrytis bunch rot. Winter hardiness is high; the grapevine variety withstands drops in winter temperatures down to -23°C...-26°C. It exhibits rapid regeneration capacity.
Winemaking and Product Characteristics
The harvest is utilized for the production of red dry wines. Due to the mechanical composition of the berries, the theoretical must yield is 81.95%. The resulting wine materials are characterized by intense coloration, high density, extractiveness, and a harmonious taste. Wines produced from the raw material of the KAYLASHKI RUBIN variety have a high potential for further bottle aging and maturation. The product regularly receives high expert degustation scores at specialized competitions.
