Key Characteristics
The Wilder variety is an interspecific hybrid obtained by crossing European grapevine with the American species Vitis labrusca. This grape variety belongs to the Isabellina group and is valued as a high-quality table grape of medium ripening period. The Wilder variety was introduced to the Primorsky Krai between 1957 and 1962, where it became widespread in private homestead vineyards, particularly in the central districts of the region. The berries possess a refreshingly pleasant taste with a mild strawberry aroma, featuring juicy and tender pulp. The primary application of the harvest is fresh consumption and the production of aromatic juices.
Morphological Description
- Bush and Vine: the Wilder grape variety features a moderate vigor of vine growth. The annual vine matures early, annually, and well.
- Leaf: large in size, irregularly rounded, and typically entire, while three-lobed leaves occur much less frequently. The petiole sinus is deep, narrow, and often closed with overlapping lobes. The lower surface of the leaf blade is covered with distinct tomentose pubescence.
- Flower: functionally female flower type.
- Bunch: medium in size, conical in shape, with occasional winged bunches. They are located on a long peduncle, and the structural density is characterized as medium.
- Berry: large in size (physical dimensions are 22×24 mm), slightly oval. The skin coloration is dark purple, and the surface is covered with a thick waxy bloom.
Agricultural Techniques
This grape variety is characterized by high and stable productivity. According to variety trials, the average yield stands at 88 c/ha, while in amateur gardening conditions, the vine productivity reaches 5–8 kg of berries per plant. Due to the functionally female flower type, the Wilder grape variety requires mandatory supplemental artificial pollination and proper vineyard placement of pollinator varieties to ensure well-filled, attractive bunches and high yields. Varieties such as Fioletovy Ranny, Chasselas Ramminga, Extra, or Lydia are recommended as effective pollinators. Shoots pinching immediately before the blooming period is also a mandatory agricultural practice. In the Far East, the variety demonstrates high resistance to downy mildew (mildew) and other common fungal diseases. The frost resistance indicators of the vine significantly exceed all European grape varieties. Cultivation is recommended as a grafted culture on frost-resistant rootstocks, while the root system requires winter protection with a soil layer 20–25 cm thick.
* VINEYARD Note: in the source, the Wilder variety is described based on observations made in the severe environmental conditions of the Russian Far East.
