Origin and Viticultural Significance
The rootstock grape variety AZOS-3 was bred at the Anapa Zonal Experimental Station of Viticulture and Winemaking through the targeted hybridization of the variety Fillokseroustoychivyy Dzhemete with the rootstocks CO4, Creciunel-2, Chasselas × Berlandieri 41-B, or Richter-44. The variety has undergone production trials under the environmental conditions of the Kuban region, has been officially zoned, and is recommended for practical application as a rootstock across all viticultural zones of the Russian Federation.
The commercial value of this rootstock is determined by its short vegetative period, highly technological cane characteristics, and its balanced growth development. The development of lime-induced chlorosis and typical vine diseases has not been observed on this rootstock.
Ampelographic Description
- Leaf: Medium-sized, five-lobed, finely incised. The leaf blade is funnel-shaped, with margins characteristically curving upward. The upper surface of the leaf features a net-wrinkled texture and dark green coloration. The main veins on the upper side are light green, while on the lower side, they acquire a faint pinkish tint. The upper sinuses are open and lyre-shaped; the lower sinuses are almost completely absent. The teeth at the tips of the lobes are narrowly triangular, with a distinctly elongated apex. The teeth along the leaf margin are triangular, occasionally transitioning to weakly convex. Pubescence on the lower surface of the leaf blade is sparse, with a bristly type of pubescence present along the veins.
- Petiolar Sinus: Open, lyre-shaped, with a distinctly rounded base. The petiole is green with a pinkish tint and is equal in length to the central vein of the leaf.
- Shoot and Cane: The growth vigor of the vines is average. The development of vegetative shoots is strictly vertical. The internode length of the canes ranges between 13 and 15 cm. The mature cane features a light brown coloration and is characterized by a round cross-section. A specific feature of this variety is the uniform development of its canes, combined with high tissue maturation rates and a low volume of lateral shoot formation.
Nursery Management and Agrotechnical Features
In nursery environments, the AZOS-3 rootstock provides a consistently high yield of standard rootstock cuttings with a length of 0.5 m, averaging 150,000–160,000 cuttings per hectare. Due to its low lateral shoot formation capacity, manual labor costs for disbudding and lateral removal in mother blocks are minimized. The variety exhibits complete immunity to lime-induced chlorosis. During the second half of the vegetative period, minor infestation by the foliar form of phylloxera may be observed, with an intensity not exceeding 0.2 points on the infestation scale. In years with excessive moisture (rainy periods), downy mildew may appear on the vines, localizing exclusively in the form of dry necrotic lesions. High rates of callus formation and biological affinity with Vitis vinifera scions guarantee effective graft healing and a high output of standard first-grade vines.
