Origin and Viticultural Significance
The rootstock variety Finist was obtained in 1988 at the All-Russian Research Institute of Viticulture and Winemaking named after Ya.I. Potapenko. The authors are I.N. Syan, M.I. Brezhneva, and S.I. Agapova. The variety was developed through the hybridization of Creciunel 2 with a rootstock selection from the family (SV 12-375 × Amurskiy). This grapevine rootstock is designed for use in the northernmost viticultural zones due to its exceptional frost hardiness. At a temperature of -27°C, bud mortality is limited to 12-15%, compared to 55% for Kober 5BB. It features early cane maturity (late July). Cuttings exhibit rooting and graft union success rates in bench and green grafting on par with the 101-14 rootstock.
Ampelographic Description of the Rootstock Variety Finist
Morphological characteristics of vegetative organs for variety identification:
- Young shoot (apex): The apex is half-open, light green, small, and glabrous. The emerging bud is weakly pubescent. Growing shoots are glabrous and intensely colored on the sun-exposed side.
- Young leaves: Bronze-colored, glabrous, entire, cuneate, and folded along the main axis. The teeth are very small and sharp. The petiolar sinus is open and shaped like an incoming angle. The petiole is short and pink, featuring a red star-shaped pattern at the base of the veins.
- Laterals and buds: Lateral shoots are short. Buds are small, sharp, and green.
- Mature leaf: Small, nearly circular, and entire, with distinct teeth on the upper lobes. The blade surface is bullate-shagreen. The tooth on the central lobe is sharp; marginal teeth are low with a wide base, predominantly dome-shaped, particularly on the lower tier leaves.
- Petiole: Red, equal to or shorter than the central leaf vein.
- Petiolar sinus: Widely open and bracket-shaped.
- Annual shoot (cane): The mature cane is light brown.
- Inflorescence (flower): The grapevine rootstock Finist develops a male flower type.
Nursery Management and Agronomic Characteristics
Vines of the rootstock variety Finist are characterized by medium vigor. The lateral shoot production capacity is medium, requiring up to 1-2 lateral disbuddings per season. At a planting spacing of 3 × 2 m under Novocherkassk conditions, the yield of standard cuttings reaches 70-85 thousand units per hectare. This performance exceeds the output of the control variety 101-14 by 15-20%.
