| Ampelographic overview |
Origin and agricultural importance
The rootstock Kober 125 AA was obtained by breeders Sigmund Teleki and Franz Kober in 1896. This rootstock variety induces medium to high vigor in grafts. It is characterized by selective absorption of mineral elements, specifically demonstrating a low capacity to absorb magnesium. It shows good affinity in grafts with the Müller-Thurgau variety. In France, six official clones are certified: 136, 181, 182, 183, 184, and 185.
Ampelographic description of the rootstock variety Kober 125 AA
The main ampelographic features used to identify the rootstock Kober 125 AA are:
- Young shoot (tip): the tip of the young shoot is half open or closed, with a medium density of prostrate hairs.
- Young leaves: characterized by a very bronzed coloration.
- Herbaceous shoot: the surface of the shoots is ribbed, with a slightly elliptic section. The anthocyanin coloration of the internodes is low to moderate, and there is a high density of erect hairs on both nodes and internodes.
- Adult leaf: large, dark green, wedge-shaped, and entire, though leaves at the base may occasionally display three lobes. The petiole sinus is open and U-shaped. Anthocyanin coloration of the veins is moderate. The lower side of the leaf blade shows a medium density of erect hairs.
- Flowers and berries: the flowers are functionally female. The berries are very small and round, with a blue-black skin.
- Woody shoot: the woody shoots feature brown or brown-grey internodes and purplish nodes. A high density of erect hairs is present on both nodes and internodes.
Aptitudes for nursery practices
Wood production in mother vines is medium to good, yielding between 30,000 and 80,000 meters of canes per hectare. The internodes are long, and the shoot diameter is moderate. Cuttings demonstrate a good rooting capacity. The root system appears susceptible to excess spring soil humidity. Resistance to iron chlorosis is low to moderate, with the grapevine rootstock tolerating up to 13% of active limestone. It is highly tolerant to the root form of phylloxera.
