Origin and agricultural importance
The rootstock 57 Richter was obtained by the breeder Richter by crossing Berlandieri Rességuier No. 1 with Rupestris Martin. It was officially registered in the national registry of Italy in 1971. This rootstock variety is characterized by medium vigor and a bushy growth habit. It exhibits high resistance to the root form of phylloxera and major fungal diseases affecting grapevines. Affinity and compatibility in graft combinations with certain varieties of Vitis vinifera are considered questionable or insufficient. The official clone I-ISV CONEGLIANO 1 is registered.
Ampelographic description of the rootstock variety 57 Richter
The main ampelographic features used to identify the rootstock 57 Richter are:
- Young shoot (tip): the tip of the young shoot is expanded, small, sparsely woolly, and reddish. The opening buds are trough-shaped; the young apical leaves are glossy, reddish, with cobwebby pubescence on the upper surface and bristly-woolly pubescence underneath.
- Herbaceous shoot: the herbaceous shoot is slightly curved, ribbed, and polygonal in cross-section. The surface is glabrous with rare woolly hairs. The internodes and nodes exhibit an intense, bright vine-red coloration, which is prominently diffused on one side of the shoot. Tendrils are intermittent, bifid, purplish, with long and sparse hairs.
- Adult leaf: small to medium in size, tending toward a reniform shape, and three-lobed (rarely five-lobed). The leaf blade is trough-folded, with an intensely green, smooth, and glabrous upper surface, and a light green, glabrous lower surface. The petiole sinus is open and U-shaped with divergent sides. The main veins are reddish at the base of the upper surface. The teeth are small, obtuse, mucronate, with convex margins. The petiole is short, reddish-green, and bristly along the groove.
- Flowers and inflorescences: the flowers are functionally female.
- Woody shoot: the woody shoots are of medium length and robustness, branched, and rounded in cross-section. The surface is glabrous and striated, dark brown with hazel spots and stripes. The internodes are short (9–11 cm long), and the nodes are prominent.
Aptitudes for nursery practices
The variety demonstrates medium budburst and flowering epochs. Wood maturity at the end of the growing season is good. Leaf fall occurs in medium to late epochs. Cuttings of the variety demonstrate a moderate rooting capacity under nursery conditions. In the production of grafted vines, preliminary verification of compatibility with specific scion varieties is required due to the risks of unsatisfactory component fusion.
