Origin and economic importance
The rootstock variety Nemadex Alain Bouquet was obtained in 1987 by specialists from the National Research Institute for Agriculture, Food and the Environment of France (INRA). The genetic origin of this form involves a complex interspecific hybridization, where the maternal form was the F1 hybrid [Vitis vinifera (Cabernet-Sauvignon × Alicante Henri Bouschet) × Muscadinia rotundifolia], and the paternal form was the 140 Ruggeri rootstock. The variety possesses a low to moderate resistance threshold to iron chlorosis, withstanding up to 15% of "active" limestone with a limestone chlorosis index (ICP) of 30. A biological characteristic of the vine is its high sensitivity to temporary water excess in the soil during spring, as well as low resistance to summer drought.
The rootstock Nemadex Alain Bouquet exhibits a very high tolerance to the root form of phylloxera. An important economic property of the vine is its partial resistance to the dagger nematodes of the Xiphinema index species, which significantly delays vineyard infection and slows down the spread of the dangerous fanleaf virus.
When grafted, this rootstock confers a rather low vigor to the scion and induces moderate yields. The only officially certified clone in France is number 1163, which is multiplied in mother vines to obtain certified planting material.
Ampelographic description of the rootstock variety Nemadex Alain Bouquet
The identification of Nemadex Alain Bouquet is based on the following morphological characteristics:
- Young shoot (tip): The tip of the young shoot is open, characterized by a low density of prostrate hairs.
- Young leaves: Green in color with distinct bronze spots.
- Shoots: The surface of the shoots is hairless, with a complete absence of both erect and prostrate hairs. The vine features a bushy and erect growth habit with short internodes.
- Adult leaf: Adult leaves are small to medium, entire, and kidney-shaped. The petiole sinus is open or very widely open, U-shaped. The teeth are short compared to their width at the base, with convex sides. The leaf blade is thin with a smooth surface, the edges of the lobes are slightly curly, and they are involute around the petiole sinus lobes. The anthocyanin coloration of the main veins is weak. On the lower side of the leaf blade, a very low density of erect hairs is noted, with a complete absence of prostrate hairs.
- Flower: Hermaphrodite.
- Berry: Very small in size and round-shaped. The skin is blue-black, and the pulp is slightly colored. The flavor characteristics of the juice include the presence of foxy aromas.
- Woody shoot: The lignified shoots are dark brown in color.
Nursery management attributes
Due to the specific vine architecture and short internodes, the variety Nemadex Alain Bouquet is characterized by an extremely low wood production in mother vines, yielding only from 10,000 to 30,000 meters of useful wood per hectare. Technological performance attributes of the cuttings during rooting, as well as the output in bench and field grafting, are evaluated as moderate to good.
