Key Characteristics
The Michurinets (VIR #83) variety is a complex interspecific grape hybrid of a medium ripening period. The variety was bred by specialists at the Central Genetic Laboratory named after I. V. Michurin. Under Far Eastern conditions, the full vegetative period from budburst to berry maturity ranges from 129 to 137 days, with the harvest taking place in the second decade of September. The Michurinets (VIR #83) grape variety is primarily used as a table grape for local fresh consumption. The fruit quality is evaluated as good: the sugar content of the berry juice is 13–15%, with a titratable acidity of 10–12 g/L. The pulp has a pleasant, harmonious sweet-and-sour taste, complemented by a delicate fruit aroma. A disadvantage of the variety is the unsatisfactory transportability of the ripe harvest.
Morphological Description
- Bush and Vine: the Michurinets (VIR #83) grape variety is characterized by a medium vigor of vine growth. Annual shoot maturity indicators are evaluated as good.
- Leaf: medium in size, rounded in shape, with weakly defined five lobes. The edges of the leaf blade are characteristically bent downward. The upper side of the leaf has a matte green coloration and a reticulate-wrinkled structure. The lower side of the leaf blade features dense tomentose pubescence with a bluish-white tint. The upper sinuses are open, of medium depth, featuring a wide apex and a rounded base; the lower sinuses are poorly developed and barely outlined. The petiole sinus is open, with a sharp base and diverging edges.
- Flower: hermaphroditic (perfect) flower type.
- Bunch: medium in size (physical dimensions are 12×5 cm), cylindrico-conical in shape, occasionally branched. The bunch structure is dense, with an average weight of 60–70 grams.
- Berry: medium to large in size (physical dimensions are 18×18 mm), rounded in shape. The skin coloration is greenish-yellow. The pulp consistency is mucilaginous and melting.
Agricultural Techniques
This grape variety demonstrates good productivity, yielding 2.3–3.2 kg of berries per mature bush. Shoot fertility is moderate: the percentage of fertile shoots on the vine varies within 52–66%. The average number of bunches per developing fertile shoot (fertility coefficient) is 1.5–1.7. The Michurinets (VIR #83) grape variety is exceptionally responsive to high soil fertility. This grape stands out for its high natural resistance to major fungal diseases. The variety is poorly studied in grafted culture; however, when grafted onto the Alpha variety rootstock, three-to-four-year-old plantings showed an average yield of 40.4 c/ha. Cultivation is recommended across all viticultural zones of the region as a grafted culture on reliable frost-resistant rootstocks.
* VINEYARD Note: in the source, the Michurinets (VIR #83) variety is described based on observations made in the severe environmental conditions of the Russian Far East.
Please note that at least one other variety exists under a similar name — Michurinets bred by the All-Russian Research Institute of Viticulture and Winemaking named after Ya. I. Potapenko.
