General Characteristics
Misket Viking is a white wine grape variety bred at the Institute of Agriculture and Seed Science "Obraztsov Chiflik" (Ruse, Bulgaria) in 1996 through the cross of Naslada × Chardonnay. The variety belongs to the mid-late ripening period. The total vegetative period from budburst to physiological maturity is approximately 155 days. In the geographical area of Ruse, the harvest ripens around September 15. The vines are vigorous and productive.
The average bunch weight is 120 grams. The berry is oval, white, weighing 1.92 grams with dimensions measuring 13.71 × 13.14 mm. The pulp is fleshy and juicy, and the flavor is harmonious with a muscat aroma. At maturity, the juice contains 22.55% of sugars and 9.01 g/l of titratable acidity. Fructose dominates the carbohydrate balance, and malic acid dominates the acidity. The berries are resistant to shattering. The grapes possess high transportability.
Viticultural Features
The Misket Viking grape variety is cultivated as grafted vines on SO4 and Chasselas × Berlandieri 41B rootstocks. With a planting density of 2.50 × 1.20 meters and training under the mid-standard Guyot system, the yield is 12 tons per hectare. Under drip irrigation with Moser and Ombrella training systems, the vine productivity increases. The variety features increased resistance to low winter temperatures within the limits of Vitis vinifera. When damaged by frosts below -18...-20 °C, the bushes rapidly restore their canopy and fruiting.
Resistance to fungal diseases is standard for European-Asian grapes. Limited chemical treatments against downy mildew and powdery mildew are required exclusively during periods of extreme air and soil moisture against a high infection background. The variety is suitable for cultivation using various types of training systems in climate zones matching the requirements of mid-late white wine grape varieties.
Winemaking and Product Characteristics
The grapes are used for the production of high-quality dry white wines. The stable preservation of titratable acidity provides the wine material with the necessary freshness, while the predominance of malic acid forms a light organoleptic crispness.
