Main Characteristics
The grape variety Riahovo was bred in Bulgaria by a team of breeders including Z. Zankov, I. Todorov, S. Pirgozliev, and T. Nakova. The parental pair was obtained in 1972 through artificial crossing of the initial varieties Trakiya and Black rose. In 1997, the Riahovo grape variety underwent official registration and was recognized by the State Variety Commission (DSK). According to its economic purpose, it belongs to the dessert group. The growing season lasts 130–134 days, and the harvest reaches consumer maturity under Bulgarian conditions approximately on August 20.
The developed conical cluster is classified as semi-dense in structure. The average cluster weight is 450 grams with dimensions of 17.4x12.6 cm. The berries are very large, of a distinct oblong shape, with an average weight of 7.4 grams and dimensions of 26.3x21.4 mm. The thin skin has a coloration ranging from yellow-green to amber. The pulp features a crunchy texture and contains medium-sized seeds. The flavor qualities are high and harmonious, with a subtle muscat aroma. At the consumer maturity stage, the Riahovo variety provides sugar accumulation at a level of 16.1% with titratable juice acidity indicators of 5.07 g/l.
Viticultural and Agro-technical Features
Plantations are characterized by a medium vigor of vine growth. When cultivating the crop using the raised Guyot training system, the Riahovo grape variety demonstrates an average yield at a level of 20 tons per hectare. Forms SO-4 and Rupestris du Lot are used as recommended rootstocks for grafting. Indicators of natural plant resistance to major fungal diseases and winter frosts are at an average level.
The technological, physical, and mechanical properties of the skin and pulp ensure good berry strength, which allows the harvested crop to tolerate long-distance transport well without losing its commercial appearance. The Riahovo variety is recommended for commercial cultivation for the purpose of wholesale and retail sale of dessert grapes and fresh consumption.
