Main characteristics
The Sukribe grape variety is an interspecific hybrid of universal use of Baltic selection. It was obtained by crossing Madeleine Angevine and Dvietes zila varieties by Latvian private breeder Pauls Sukatnieks in 1959 in the vineyard in Dviete parish of Ilukste municipality. The primary selection of the hybrid form was carried out in 1968. A related variety, Supaga, was selected by the author from the same cross combination.
The variety is of an ultra-early ripening period; the time from the beginning of bud burst to the onset of harvest maturity of the berries is 95–105 days. In the conditions of Novocherkassk, the harvest reaches consumer maturity in late July or the first ten days of August. When grown in open ground in the territory of Bashkiria, the harvesting of fruits is carried out in early September.
The plantations demonstrate high and stable yields. The Sukribe variety forms small clusters of cylindrical-conical shape with an average weight of 150 to 230 grams. The cluster structure varies from loose to dense. A characteristic morphological feature is the distinct crimson coloration of the peduncle. The berries are round, uniform, weighing 2.0–4.0 grams. The skin color is white or white-green. The pulp features a juicy consistency with a harmonious fruit-pineapple flavor and a light wild strawberry aroma, characteristic of representatives of the Vitis labrusca species. The berry skin is dense, with medium thickness. The berry juice is clear.
Morphological description of the Sukribe grape variety
A full detailed description of the morphology of the Sukribe variety is absent in modern academic ampelographic works. Based on the available practical data from amateur viticulture, the following key features are identified:
- Vine: intensively developed, shoots possess very high vigor. Lateral shoot formation is moderate.
- Canes: the annual growth matures very well by the end of the growing season, along almost the entire length.
- Leaf: the formed leaf blade is of medium size, pentagonal or round shape, slightly lobed, almost entire. The leaf surface is slightly wrinkled, with outlined upper sinuses. Small serrated teeth are located along the margins. The petiole sinus is open, dome-shaped, with an angular base.
- Flower: the flower type is hermaphroditic; the variety does not require additional pollinators.
Features of agricultural technology
The Sukribe grape variety is characterized by high winter hardiness. The frost resistance of the central buds is about -26°C, while the tissues of perennial wood and replacing buds are able to withstand temperature drops in the winter period down to extreme -28…-30°C. Due to this, the variety is perfectly suited for training as an uncovered arbor culture.
Due to high genetic resistance to main fungal diseases, Sukribe vines require almost no protective treatments. In severe climatic conditions and high infection pressure, three preventive treatments per season are sufficient. Damage to the ripening harvest by gray mold is rarely recorded.
Winemaking and features of the finished product
The harvest has a universal purpose, used for fresh consumption and processing into wines or juices. In northern winemaking regions, the Sukribe grape variety is used for the production of white table wines. The finished product stands out for its specific varietal profile with the dominance of fruit and pineapple-strawberry tones in the aroma and taste.
