Main characteristics
The Supaga grape variety is an interspecific hybrid of universal and table use of Baltic selection. It was obtained by the Latvian private breeder Pauls Sukatnieks in the vineyard in Dviete parish of Ilukste municipality. The crossing of the parent pair Madeleine Angevine and Dvietes zila was performed in 1959, and in 1964 the hybrid form was selected. A related variety, Sukribe, was selected by the author from a similar combination.
The variety is of an early (early-medium) ripening period; the time from the beginning of bud burst to the onset of harvest maturity of the berries is 115–120 days. In the conditions of Latvia, the harvest occurs in early August. When grown in open ground in the territory of Bashkiria, in the absence of bush overloading, consumer maturity is reached in early September. The plantations are suitable for arbor culture and demonstrate high and stable yields. The transportability of the clusters is good. The purpose of the harvest is universal: fresh consumption, preparation of juices, and white table wines. The tasting score of fresh grapes is 7.4 points.
The Supaga grape variety forms large or medium clusters of cylindrical-conical shape, sometimes with a distinct wing. The cluster weight varies from 200 to 400 grams, and the structure is loose or of medium density. A specific varietal feature is the red coloration of the peduncles. The berries are large or medium, round or slightly oval, uniform, weighing from 2.5 to 4.8 grams. The skin is dense, edible, and its color is white (greenish-yellow or white-green). The pulp is juicy, with slight mucilaginousness. The taste is harmonious, with a pronounced pleasant pineapple-strawberry (isabella) aroma. The berry juice is clear. High sugar accumulation is noted at the level of 17–28% (up to 22% Brix in Bashkiria conditions) with a titratable juice acidity within 5–7 g/l. Ripe clusters can remain on the bushes for a long time without losing market and flavor qualities.
Morphological description of the Supaga grape variety
A full detailed description of the morphology is absent in modern academic ampelographic publications. Based on the available practical data from amateur viticulture, the following varietal features are identified:
- Bush: possess high vigor; shoots develop intensively. Lateral shoot formation is moderate.
- Vine: the annual growth matures very well. Compatibility with common rootstocks in grafting is good.
- Leaf: the formed leaf blade is of medium size, varying from entire to three-lobed, slightly lobed. The leaf surface is smooth. The petiole sinus is open.
- Flower: the flower type is hermaphroditic; the variety does not require additional pollinators.
Features of agricultural technology
The number of fruitful shoots on the bush is 80–85%, and the average fruitfulness coefficient equals 1.5–1.79 clusters per shoot. The total optimal bud load per bush is 30–40 buds with a short or medium pruning of fruiting canes, leaving 4–6 buds.
The Supaga grape variety possesses high winter hardiness. The stated frost resistance is -25°C, however, according to practical data, the bushes are able to withstand winter frosts down to -29°C without damage to the perennial wood and buds. Genetic resistance to downy mildew, powdery mildew, and gray mold is quite good. In normal seasons, the bushes require two preventive treatments with fungicides, and under high infection pressure, three treatments are necessary.
