Origin and Viticultural Significance
The rootstock grape variety AZOS-5 was bred at the Anapa Zonal Experimental Station of Viticulture and Winemaking through the targeted hybridization of the variety Fillokseroustoychivyy Dzhemete with the rootstocks CO4, Creciunel-2, Chasselas × Berlandieri 41-B, or Richter-44. The variety has undergone production trials under the environmental conditions of the Kuban region, has been officially zoned, and is recommended for practical application as a rootstock across all viticultural zones of the Russian Federation.
The commercial value of this rootstock lies in its high degree of adaptability to diverse soil conditions, short vegetative period, and outstanding resistance to major pathogens. The variety ensures excellent graft compatibility with many European grape varieties (Vitis vinifera), guaranteeing a high output of quality first-grade planting material. The development of lime-induced chlorosis has not been observed on this rootstock.
Ampelographic Description
- Leaf: Medium-sized, orbicular, five-lobed, with a medium degree of incision. The leaf blade is undulating and funnel-shaped. The upper surface is characterized by a slightly wrinkled texture. The main veins on both the upper and lower surfaces of the leaf are green. The upper sinuses are open and lyre-shaped with a rounded base. The lower sinuses are weakly defined and slightly open. The teeth along the margins of the lobes are sharply triangular with a slightly elongated tip. Pubescence on the lower surface of the leaf is sparse and bristly, localized strictly along the veins.
- Petiolar Sinus: Closed, without a distinct opening. The petiole is equal in length to the central vein of the leaf.
- Shoot and Cane: The vines are characterized by strong growth vigor (highly vigorous). The internode length of the vegetative shoots ranges between 14 and 15 cm. The mature cane features a uniform brown color. Cane lignification initiates in the second half of August. Lateral shoot development on the vines is negligible.
- Cluster and Berry: Clusters are small, cylindrical-conical, and loose. Berries are very small, globose, and dark violet in color, turning a deep bluish-black upon full maturity. The seed is small, oval-elongated, and dark brown.
Nursery Management and Agrotechnical Features
In nursery environments, the AZOS-5 rootstock is highly valued for its non-exacting nature regarding soil types and low lateral shoot formation capacity, which minimizes manual labor costs for canopy management on mother vines. The variety provides a stable high yield of standard rootstock cuttings suitable for grafting, averaging 150,000–160,000 cuttings per hectare. The rootstock demonstrates absolute resistance against downy mildew (Plasmopara viticola) and powdery mildew (Uncinula necator)—the infestation rating for these fungal diseases is 0 points. Additionally, the variety features complete immunity to lime-induced chlorosis and is not damaged by the foliar form of phylloxera. High affinity indicators with Vitis vinifera scions ensure superior component healing and an increased output of standard first-grade vines from the commercial nursery blocks.
