Origin and Viticultural Significance
The rootstock grape variety AZOS-6 was bred at the Anapa Zonal Experimental Station of Viticulture and Winemaking through the targeted hybridization of the variety Fillokseroustoychivyy Dzhemete with the rootstocks CO4, Creciunel-2, Chasselas × Berlandieri 41-B, or Richter-44. The variety has successfully undergone comprehensive production trials under the environmental conditions of the Kuban region, has been officially zoned, and is recommended for practical application as a rootstock across all viticultural zones of the Russian Federation.
The commercial value of this rootstock lies in its short vegetative period, low lateral shoot formation capacity, and high rates of natural cane maturation by the end of the season. The variety features excellent technological properties, ensuring reliable callus formation and high graft take with European grape varieties (Vitis vinifera), guaranteeing a stable output of high-quality, first-grade vines. The development of lime-induced chlorosis has not been observed on this rootstock.
Ampelographic Description
- Leaf: Medium-sized, orbicular, five-lobed, almost entire. The leaf blade is undulating. The upper surface of the leaf features a net-wrinkled texture. Both upper and lower veins are colored green. The upper sinuses are open and V-shaped (in the form of an incoming angle); the lower sinuses are significantly weaker defined. The teeth along the leaf margins are broadly triangular in shape. Pubescence on the lower surface of the leaf is sparse and bristly, located strictly along the veins.
- Petiolar Sinus: Closed, with a neat oval base. The petiole is shorter in length than the central vein of the leaf.
- Shoot and Cane: The growth vigor of the vines is above average. The vegetative shoots are erect. The mature cane features a uniform brown coloration. By the end of the vegetative season, the shoots mature well, with tissue lignification rates reaching 85–95%. Lateral shoot development on the vines is negligible.
Nursery Management and Agrotechnical Features
In commercial nursery production, the AZOS-6 rootstock demonstrates high suitability for rootstock mother blocks due to its low lateral shoot formation capacity, which significantly reduces total manual labor costs for canopy management. The variety provides a consistently high yield of standard rootstock cuttings with a length of 0.5 m, averaging 150,000–160,000 cuttings per hectare. By the end of the vegetative period, the canes ensure a high quality of tissue maturation (up to 95%). The rootstock exhibits complete immunity to lime-induced chlorosis and is absolutely not damaged by the foliar form of phylloxera. The development of typical fungal vine diseases has not been observed on the plantations. Superior affinity indicators with Vitis vinifera scions facilitate easy graft healing and a high output of standard first-grade vines from the commercial nursery blocks.
