Main Characteristics
The grape variety Bolgar Clone 14 is a result of clonal selection carried out in Bulgaria by the researcher Ivan Todorov. The isolation of this form was achieved through individual selection from the parental population of the original Bolgar variety. In 1974, the Bolgar Clone 14 grape variety was officially entered into the Bulgarian National Variety Register. In terms of utilization, it belongs to the table (dessert) group. The harvest reaches consumer maturity between September 10 and September 15.
The average weight of a developed cluster is 540 grams. The clusters have a cylindrico-conical shape and are classified as loose or semi-dense in structure. The berries are large, with an average weight of about 6.5 grams, and are characterized by a long, cylindrical shape. Upon reaching full maturity, the skin acquires a distinct golden-yellow coloration. The pulp and flavor profiles fully correspond to the classic varietal characteristics of the benchmark Bolgar grape. At the stage of consumer maturity, the Bolgar Clone 14 variety provides sugar accumulation in the range of 14% to 17%, with titratable juice acidity levels ranging from 5.0 to 7.9 g/l.
Viticultural and Agro-technical Features
The Bolgar Clone 14 grape variety demonstrates increased productivity, outyielding the original parental population by 20%. The average harvest yield stands at 20 tons per hectare when cultivated using the mid-stem Guyot training system without supplementary artificial irrigation. Forms Rupestris du Lot and SO-4 are designated as the recommended rootstocks for establishing mother blocks and commercial vineyards.
During variety trials, the isolated clone demonstrated significantly higher resistance to flower shattering and the development of shot berries (millerandage) compared to the initial plant population. The Bolgar Clone 14 variety is characterized by high parameters of berry attachment strength and skin density, which determines its excellent transportability during long-distance shipping and its high commercial value for fresh market sales.
