Main Characteristics
The grape variety Lesya was bred at the V.E. Tairov Institute of Viticulture and Winemaking from a cross of the varieties Nimrang and Zhemchug Saba carried out in 1960. The authors of the variety are P.K. Aivazyan, E.N. Dokuchaeva, M.I. Tulaeva, L.F. Meleshko, A.K. Samborskaya, and A.P. Ablyazova. The Lesya grape variety is regionalized in the Mykolaiv and Odesa regions. Lesya is an early-ripening grape variety: 127 days pass from the beginning of bud burst to harvest maturity with a sum of active temperatures of 2464 °C. The crop ripens in late August to early September. The vigor of the bushes is medium, and annual shoots ripen to 80%.
The variety is distinguished by high yields (under un-covered cultivation at the V.E. Tairov Institute, it amounted to 115 c/ha for the period 1973–1979). The bunches are of medium size, cylindric-conical or conical, of medium density or dense, with an average weight of 354 g. The berry is of medium size or large, oval, pink with a violet tint, and covered with a heavy waxy bloom. The skin is thin and tearing, the flesh is meaty-juicy and firm, and the taste is harmonious with a distinct muscat flavor. The berries contain 2–3 medium-sized seeds. The berries accumulate an average sugar content of 16.1 g/100 ml with a titratable acidity of 8.3 g/l. The marketability of the bunches reaches 60–75%. The organoleptic score is 8.4 points, and the Lesya grape variety is used primarily for fresh consumption.
Morphological Description of Lesya Grape Variety
- Young shoot (apex): The apex of the young shoot is light green with bronze margins and medium araneose pubescence. Subsequent leaves are light green with a golden tint and weak araneose pubescence.
- Leaf: The leaf is of medium size, roundish, weakly cleft, three-lobed or almost entire, and saucer-shaped curved. The pubescence of the lower leaf surface is bristly. The autumn coloration of the leaves is bright red.
- Sinuses and recesses: The upper lateral sinuses are shallow, open, in the form of an incoming angle or barely outlined; the lower sinuses are barely outlined. The petiolar sinus is open and lyre-shaped.
- Teeth: The teeth at the ends of the lobes are triangular with weakly convex sides and a sharp apex. The marginal teeth are sawtooth-like with a wide base and convex sides, transitional to dome-shaped.
- Bunch: Of medium size (17–18 cm long, 15–16 cm wide), cylindric-conical or conical, of medium density or dense. The bunch stem is of medium length (6–7 cm) and durable.
- Berry: Medium to large (21–22 mm long, 18–20 mm wide), oval. The coloration is pink with a violet tint, and the waxy bloom is heavy.
- Saplings: Spreading. The tips of the shoots are light green with a yellowish tint. Leaves are roundish, almost entire, and without pubescence.
Features of Agrotechnics
The Lesya grape variety demonstrates high and stable productivity. The proportion of productive shoots is 56%, the average number of bunches per developed shoot is 0.7, and per productive shoot is 1.2. This grape variety can be cultivated using a trunkless multi-arm fan training method, where pruning of fruiting canes is carried out leaving 6–8 buds. Under the conditions of the V.E. Tairov Institute, a high-trunk cordon training system with a trunk height of 70 cm and a vine spacing of 2.5 × 1.5 m has also been successfully applied. In this case, short pruning of fruiting canes is recommended, with mandatory removal of excess shoots, leaving 25–30 green shoots per vine. The Lesya grape variety grows well on the Riparia × Rupestris 101-14 rootstock.
The resistance indicators of the Lesya grape variety are low: it is susceptible to mildew and oidium, and also possesses low resistance to root phylloxera and grape berry moth. The berries are weakly affected by gray rot. The winter hardiness of the variety is rated as low. In certain years, a significant berry shot (millerandage) can be observed in this variety. The mechanical properties of the berries are characterized by a detachment force of 284 g and a crushing resistance of 1273 g.
* VINEYARD Note: This grape variety is registered in the VIVC catalog twice under the numbers 6815 and 12767. In the VINEYARD Encyclopedia, we record the identifier 6815 as the earlier one.
